Denver’s University Hills has easy access to I-25, making it a popular spot to put down roots for commuters. Despite encompassing a more compact portion of Denver than other neighborhoods, University Hills has a bit of everything. SONDER Coffee & Tea is an independent craft coffee company located inside Junction Food & Drink, which is one of the best one-stop shops in Denver’s University Hills. SONDER roasts its own small-batch coffees and sells its beans in shops or online so you can continue enjoying your brew at home.

Sojourners Gelato Cafe

Another tasty addition to Junction Food & Drink, Sojourners not only serves delicious gelato scoops, cakes, macarons, and gelato-topped waffles — they also have a coffee menu for those looking for a caffeinated pick-me-up. Try the espresso Italiano or macchiato or opt for a classic iced latte or a cup of freshly brewed tea. If you have a sweet tooth, Sojourners crafts a tasty gelato latte and affogato.

Kokoro

Another University Hills favorite located in Welshire Plaza, Kokora is known for its casual Japanese fare. Kokora only uses premium ingredients and whenever possible, they source their veggies and produce from Colorado growers. The establishment was opened in 1986 and is still serving up beef curry bowls as well as a range of ramen and sushi options. 

Cafe de France

Cafe de France has been wowing University Hill’s residents with delicious French food since 2008. The service is exceptional and the cuisine is mouthwatering, which is why the restaurant has gained a loyal following. The charming patio area is the perfect place to enjoy a cool summer breeze while sipping on an espresso and enjoying a Nutella crepe. 

Murray’s Cheese

Not only a New York City destination, Murray’s Cheese is the perfect spot to stop in for a glass of wine and a section of artisanal cheeses. Each Murray’s store carries around 175 local, domestic, and international cheeses. They’re accessible and affordable, allowing everybody to build the charcuterie board of their dreams. Your guests will be raving about where you sourced the delicious cheese. 

Crown Burgers

You won’t find any frills at Crown Burgers. Serving up the “best burgers in Denver,” this University Hills fast-food restaurant has been in business for nearly three decades. The old-school atmosphere makes this a destination location as well as the quality ingredients and diversity of the menu offering. Crown Burgers has breakfast specials, burgers, gyros, and sides such as chili and onion rings. 

Taste of Philly

2432 South Colorado Boulevard  

Taste of Philly is a popular chain joint around Colorado, serving up the best of Philadelphia cheesesteaks since 1993. There are also hoagies, grinders, and specialty sandwiches on the menu for those who don’t want the cheesiness of a cheesesteak. This makes for the perfect lunch break or even a quick grab-and-go dinner that’s sure to satisfy.

University Hills Plaza

The plaza is South Denver’s historic destination for all things shopping and dining. With many major retailers, such as Target, Party City, Jo-Ann Fabrics, and more, University Hills Plaza also features smaller, independent retailers such as ABS Custom Framing, Phelps Shoe Service, and the ever-popular Timbuk Toys.  

University Hills Farmers Market 

2500 South Colorado Boulevard  

The University Hills Farmers Market is returning to the neighborhood for its sixth year between May 13th and October 28th. There will be a variety of growers, artisans, and all types of vendors. Community organizations that are also participating include Denver Urban Gardens, Compost Colorado, and the High Line Canal Conservancy. Admission is always free and the market will recur weekly on Saturdays between 9 AM and 1 PM.

Book Rack

It doesn’t matter if you’re in search of a specific read or you just want to browse until something strikes your interest. Book Rack has been in Denver since 1977 and has impressive collections of children’s books, science fiction books, and everything in between. 

Timbuk Toys 

2526 South Colorado Boulevard  

Your one-stop for all birthdays, holidays, and gift-giving occasions — Timbuk Toys has it all. Legos, stuffed animals, magic sets, dinosaurs, dragons, and monsters, oh my! Timbuk Toys is an independent toy store that also has an online shopping presence. Their website conveniently categorizes toys into age groups, interests, and even themes for easy shopping. 

The Nightlife Scene Around University Hills 

Despite not being the best neighborhood for bars and nightclubs, University Hills has two theaters that always have something new on the screen. If you want to get competitive, head over to Dave & Buster’s for an evening of entertainment or sip a cocktail at Junction Bar.

Landmark’s Chez Artiste Theatre 

4150 East Amherst Avenue 

The Chez Artiste Theatre has three screens and moviegoers will find a range of showings within the independent film and foreign language cinema genre. Recent screenings include You Hurt My Feelings, It Ain’t Over, and Asteroid City by West Anderson. Ticket holders will enjoy the plush leather-style seats and the upgraded digital sound. Don’t forget — when you buy a large popcorn or soda, you’ll receive free refills for the duration of the show. 

Regal UAColorado Center

For a more traditional moviegoing experience, the Regal UAColorado Center provides multiple theaters showing all the newest blockbuster movies. Current promotions include the Regal Unlimited Pass, which provides all-you-can-watch movies and breaks even in just two visits. Dave & Buster’s

Not only is Dave & Buster’s a sports bar and an arcade but there’s also a restaurant serving up surprisingly delicious plates. The food and drink program stands on its own. Happy hour runs every weekday between 4 PM and 7 PM. On Wednesdays, all games are half-off. Whether you’re looking to catch the game and enjoy a few drinks or get competitive with friends over classic video games or even a round of ultimate dodgeball — Dave & Buster’s has everything for a fun night out.

Junction Bar

Looking to enjoy a thoughtfully crafted cocktail or celebrate margarita Monday? Junction Bar, located in Junction Food & Drink offers weekly bar specials, including happy hour on the weekdays from 3 PM to 6 PM, as well as Winedown Wednesdays and Sunday Funday Gameday. Featured cocktails include the Celtic Sour, the Shotgun Wedding, and the Denver Sunset.  

University Hill’s Outdoor Spaces 

Despite being one of Denver’s smaller neighborhoods, University Hills still succeeds in providing residents with several green space options to secure your daily dose of vitamin D. 

Eisenhower (Mamie Doud) Park

Eisenhower Park is bordered on the south end by the Highline Canal. There are several picnic areas, all with plenty of shade. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the softball and multi-use fields, as well as the tennis courts on the west end. The Eisenhower Recreation Center includes an outdoor pool, cardio machines, and weight training equipment. 

Magna Carta Park

Across from the Wellshire Golf Course, Magna Carta Park is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic and let the kids run around on the playground. There is a multi-use field, as well as a border of trees that provide ample shade during the warm summer months. There are grills available, restrooms, and plenty of parking.

Cottonwood Critters Sculpture 

5501 East Eastman Avenue  

Designated as a tourist attraction, Cottonwood Critters Sculpture by Chainsaw Mama is free to view and makes for a fun afternoon trip. The details in the wood carvings are intricate and the famed wooden bench can be found on the High Line Trail. This public art installation is a hidden gem in the University Hills area.

Denver Public Library: Ross-University Hills Branch

Nothing beats being in close proximity to a public library. This is the perfect place to find some quiet time to read, work, or simply relax. The Ross-University Hills Branch puts on events such as dance parties, creative book-making, and toddler storytime.
